2. The Sun

The sun is the primary source of life on the planet earth.

3. Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest planet to the sun.

4. Venus

Venus is the second planet from the sun and similar to the earth is size.

5. Earth

Earth is the third planet from the sun and the only planet known to support life.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and one of the four ‘rocky’ planets.

10. Neptune

Neptune is the eighth and last planet in our solar system.

11. Vocabulary Building

The following is a recommended list of words and their definitions for students.

gas giant: a large planet that is mostly made up of hydrogen and helium, such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune.

rocky planet:  planets made up of silicate rocks or metals. The rocky planets are the solar system’s inner planets. Thus, the rocky planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

sun: the star that the earth orbits around.
