El Gamma Penumbra is a Filipino performing group that used shadow play techniques to win the “Asia’s Got Talent” competition.

Origin of Shadow Play
The shadow play was created over 2000 years ago in ancient China. The story is that when a favorite concubine of Emperor Wu died, he ordered his court to bring her back to life. They did so with a shadow puppet of the woman.

El Gamma Penumbra
El Gamma Penumbra is a Filipino shadow play performance group. They originally were a hip-hop dance group. However, with so many hip-hop dance groups in the Philippines, they switched to shadow play. They utilize a combination of props and their bodies to cast shadows upon a screen.
In 2015, the group won the $100,000 grand prize in “Asia’s Got Talent.” Their performances carry a message on modern social problems.
