Spiders are arthropods that have eight jointed legs. Within the Arthropoda phylum, spiders belong to the order Aranaea. There are over 40,000 species of spiders in the world.
Spiders can be found throughout the world. The only continent without spiders is Antarctica. Spiders can be found in a wide range of habitats. These range from the desert to the tropical rainforest.
The Danger of Venomous Spiders
Spiders have a menacing appearance. Some carry a deadly venom. This results in a widespread fear of spiders among people. This fear of spiders is called arachnophobia. The most deadly spider may be the Brazilian wandering spider.
Most spiders will avoid human contact. However every year, spider bites are reported. Most are only about as painful as a bee sting. Only a handful of spiders are very poisonous and can cause human deaths.
The venom of the spider can be harmful in two major ways. First, some spiders have a that attacks the nervous system of their prey. This may result in difficulty with breathing.
Alternately, the venom may attack the body tissues. This results in wounds that are difficult to heal.
A third danger may arise if a person has a severe allergic reaction to a spider bite. This reaction could result in death.
