KPop is short for Korean Pop music. It is a type of very popular teen music and dance in Korea. KPop also refers to a way of life for some of South Korea’s young people. In the last decade, KPop has become popular throughout Asia. In recent years, it has also begun to spread to the Western countries.
This spread of popular Korean music is part of the “Korean Wave”. The Korean Wave refers to the spread of Korean culture to other parts of the world. Now, KPop has allowed South Korea to become a major force in shaping the world’s popular culture.

Psy is the stage name for Park Jae-Sang. He is a singer, dancer and a producer of records. He was born in 1977 in the Gangnam District of Seoul, Korea. His parents were well to do. His father was a corporate executive and his mother owned several restaurants. ‘Gangnam Style’ refers to a wealthy and fashionable upscale lifestyle.
Psy studied in the United States. In the United States, he decided not to follow in his father’s footsteps as a businessman. Instead, he began to pursue studies in music. He returned to Korea to become a singer. His first album in 2001 was received with controversy in Korea. Many thought it contained inappropriate materials. Psy was fined by the Korean government. However, since then Psy has become a popular singer in Korea.
In 2012, Psy’s song ‘Gangnam Style’ became the most viewed video on YouTube. His video has been viewed over one billion times over the internet. The song made it to the first place in music charts in over 30 countries around the world.
The KPop industry made over 3 billion dollars in money for Korea in 2012. KPop music is a blend of music and dance. Gangnam Style is popular not only for its music, but for the dance contained within the video. The catchy combination made it an instant international hit. KPop has its roots in Western music. But performers like Psy have taken it beyond a simple imitation of Western music. Psy has managed to create something that is unique to Korea.
The Korean Wave is not limited to popular music. Korean soap operas have also become popular around the world. Popular soaps like ‘Boys Over Flowers’ have become popular throughout Asia.
